Aside from his verbal sparring with a fellow commentator, Mark Waugh had focused on Virat Kohli’s catch in the series opener in Nagpur.
The bickering of Mark Waugh during his time as commentator for the first two test matches of the series between India and Australia caused some controversy, and it is believed that this played a role in the BCCI not extending Waugh’s contract for the remaining two test matches of the series and replacing him with Mitchell Johnson in Indore. Waugh also targeted Virat Kohli for catching in Nagpur after he had three catches. Kohli dropped Steve Smith’s catch while batting on six in the first innings, and David Warner and Pat Handscomb’s catches in the second. Waugh’s assessment was harsh.
He said on Star Sports that, “Fielding at slip off the spinners, you got to judge the depth at which you want to stand.” I had the impression that Kohli was rushed into taking the catch. I believe Kohli can improve on a few technical aspects. I believe his feet are too far apart. His weight is frequently distributed on his heels rather than his feet. He appears to be surprised by the ball at times. He has to be expecting the ball with each and every delivery.”
He raised questions on Kohli’s catching but never raised any questions regarding his batting. He went on to say, “I wasn’t slagging his batting.” I was mocking his catching, which he did improve. He put in a lot of effort. But I can’t believe Virat Kohli hasn’t scored a century in his last 39 innings “Waugh stated this on Fox Cricket. “The way he batted and even caught shows that he has felt the pressure, without a doubt.” He is a great player, so he isn’t used to not scoring runs, but I felt like he was getting back to his best in Delhi.”
Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin believes this is the ideal opportunity for Virat Kohli to reclaim his form.
