Ashish Chaudhary of Tokyo moved to the 80kg pre-quarterfinals with a split decision win over Meysam Gheshlaghi of Iran on Tuesday at the Men’s World Boxing Championships in Tashkent. Ashish defeated the previous Asian Championships silver medallist 4-1 in a hard-fought match. In the opening round, the 28-year-old from Himachal Pradesh showed his aggressive intent from the start, delivering strong punches to put his opponent at away.
Ashish, the 2019 Asian Championships silver champion, then outpaced the Iranian with his deft movement and superior technical abilities.
In the round of 16, he will face a stiff battle from Cuba’s two-time Olympic champion Arlen Lopez.
Meanwhile, rookie Harsh Choudhary was eliminated from the tournament after losing a 0-5 unanimous decision against Australia’s Billy McAllister in the 86kg weight class.
On Wednesday, Nishant Dev (71kg) will face 2021 World Championships bronze winner Sarkhan Alliyev of Azerbaijan in his opening match of the event, which will include 538 boxers from 107 countries, including numerous Olympic medalists.
