Kiran George easily defeated Chinese player Weng Hong Yang, ranked 26th in the world, on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open.
In straight games, India’s Kiran George defeated China’s Weng Hong Yang, ranked 26th in the world, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open Super 500 competition on Thursday. In the men’s singles round of 16 match, Kiran, the world’s 59th-ranked player, defeated his higher-ranked Chinese opponent 21-11, 21-19, in 39 minutes. Kiran has never before advanced to the quarterfinals of a BWF World Tour Super 500 competition. The winner of the 2022 Odisha Open will compete against the victor of Friday’s match between Toma Junior Popov of France and Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong.
However, 23-year-old Ashmita Chaliha’s career was over after she lost to former Olympic and three-time World Champion Carolina Marin of Spain, 18-21, 13-21.
Later on in the day, pre-quarterfinal matches will be played between men’s doubles team Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, Lakshya Sen, and Saina Nehwal.
The six tiers of the BWF World Tour are World Tour Finals, four Super 1000, six Super 750, seven Super 500, and eleven Super 300, in that order. Ranking points are also offered for another event level, the BWF Tour Super 100 level.
According to the BWF tournament rating system, the Super 500 is a Grade 2 (level 4) competition.
