The Netherlands defeated the West Indies in a super over thriler, while Zimbabwe recreated history against the United States.
West Indies, who suffered their second straight loss in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023, were defeated by Netherlands thanks to Logan van Beek’s heroics in the super over.
The all-rounder hit three sixes and three fours from Jason Holder’s super over after falling to the final ball of the regular innings for a 14-ball 28 with only a single needed.
The Dutchman took charge after Holder’s outstanding catch to dismiss van Beek and break the odd stalemate, dismissing Johnson Charles and Romario Shepherd in quick succession after his fireworks with the bat to determine the result.
After being given the ball, the Windies made a solid offensive showing. Opening pair Johnson Charles and Brandon King (76) combined 101 runs before the former was caught lbw for 54.
Prior to another century stand, this one between Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran, ending when Hope was caught on the rope trying to bring up a half-century with a maximum, Saqib Zulfiqar dismissed Sharmah Brooks (25) and King (76) in consecutive overs.
Pooran reached his second century in a row before joining forces with Keemo Paul to help the Windies score 61 runs off their final five overs.
