India legend leaves the Delhi Capitals after being named the favourite to succeed Chetan Sharma.

The former India captain was named a ‘frontrunner’ to take over as BCCI top selector, and his departure from DC could be proof of that.

The Indian Premier League team Delhi Capitals made a move on Thursday that all but verified speculations about a contender for Team India’s new chief selector post. The Capitals announced their decision to part ways with assistant coach Ajit Agarkar, who has been heavily linked with the BCCI post; the Capitals also confirmed their split with Shane Watson, a fellow assistant coach alongside the former India star.

Agarkar was reportedly the front-runner to replace the current chief selector on the board days before the announcement. Since Chetan Sharma was controversially fired earlier this year after leaking confidential information on the Indian men’s team in a sting operation, the role has been vacant.

On their Twitter account, Capitals wrote, “You’ll always have a place to call home here. Thank You, Ajit and Watto, for your contributions. All the very best for your future endeavours.”

The application deadline for the position of chief selector is June 30, and interviews will likely take place on July 1.

The BCCI official added to the news agency, “The CAC has the responsibility to choose a selector who can stand up to the high profile team management in case there are disagreements.

Agarkar has already been linked to the position of chief selector, but he is now more likely to be hired for the demanding position. Agarkar has a wealth of international experience, having played for India in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20 Internationals. He was an important player for India in Tests and ODIs in the early 2000s and was a part of the team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007.
