Majid had been suffering with depression since his adolescence, according to his brother Umar, and had lately experienced another spell.
Majid Ali, a well-known Pakistani snooker player and Asian Under-21 silver medalist, committed suicide on Thursday in his village of Samundri, near Faisalabad in Punjab. He was 28. According to investigators, Majid had been suffering from despair since his playing days and ended his life by using a wood-cutting machine. He represented Pakistan in various international events and was a national circuit top-ranked player.
Majid’s death is the second in a month for a snooker player. Muhammad Bilal, another elite snooker player, died last month following a cardiac arrest.
Majid had been suffering from depression since his adolescence, according to his brother Umar, and had lately relapsed.
“It’s horrifying for us because we never expected him to commit suicide,” Umar added.
Majid’s death has upset the entire community, according to Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Chairman Alamgir Sheikh.
“He had so much talent and was young, and we expected so much from him to bring laurels for Pakistan,” he explained.
Majid had no financial problems, according to Sheikh.
After stars like as Muhammad Yousuf and Muhammad Asif, among others, helped win the World and Asian Championship titles, snooker has become a high-profile sport in the country, with a few players even making it to the professional circuit.
