Moeen Ali, an England Ashes star, has announced his retirement from cricket, joining Stuart Broad.
Moeen Ali has announced his retirement from cricket after a spectacular Ashes series. Following the dramatic fifth test against Australia, the offspin bowler has followed Stuart Broad in retiring from the sport.
Ali had altered his decision to retire from Test cricket ahead of the match against Australia. After Jack Leach was ruled out with a back ailment, the 35-year-old decided to join the squad.
And he has now stated that he will retire alongside fellow England legend Broad following a thrilling fifth test at Edgbaston. Broad’s two wickets secured an England victory in their final match, bringing the Ashes series to a 2-2 tie.
After pulling England over the line, the audience gave Broad a standing ovation. And, while he basked in the adoration, the 37-year-old invited Ali to join him, a clear indication that the latter, too, would be retiring from the game.
“Special mention to Moeen Ali,” Broad stated in an interview with Sky Sports. “I suppose he hasn’t officially announced his retirement, that he’s moving on.” But we went away together, and he’s been such a good friend.
“It would be a dream come true for him to put in that kind of performance to help England win an Ashes test.”
Ali later quipped that if he is required for the 2025 Ashes series, he will erase any additional SOS calls from captain Ben Stokes. “I am done,” he declared. “If Stokesy messages me again, I will probably delete it.”
