WI vs IND: West Indies lose 10% of their match fee due to slow overrate, and India fined 5%

After playing the first T20 International in Trinidad and Tobago on August 3, the Indian side and the West Indies received fines for maintaining a slow overrate. The Windies, who fell two overs short of the necessary over rate, were fined 10% of their match fees while The Men in Blue were penalised 5% of their match fees for going under the required number of overs.

After Hardik Pandya’s team and Rovman Powell’s squad were found to be, respectively, one and two overs short of the objective, match referee Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel assessed the sanction.

Players are fined 5% of their match fees for each over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, up to a maximum of 50% of the match fee, according to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences.

There was no formal hearing since Hardik Pandya and Powell admitted their errors and entered guilty pleas.

On Thursday at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, the host team defeated India by a score of four runs. West Indies chose to open the batting after winning the toss. With the support of Rovman Powell, who finished with 48 off 32 balls and Nicholas Pooran, a wicketkeeper-batter, they were able to score 149/6.

Despite Tilak Varma’s valiant innings of 39 off 22 in his maiden match, India was unable to chase down the mark. West Indies’ preferred bowler, Jason Holder (2/19), was honoured as the game’s MVP. The second Twenty20 International between India and the West Indies will take place on Sunday, August 6, at Providence Stadium in Guyana.
