The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has restored former Test pace bowler Sarfaraz Nawaz’s pension, which had been suspended since January 2017 after he made baseless derogatory allegations about previous Chairman Najam Sethi. The ex gratia payments were halted as a result of disciplinary actions started against Nawaz by previous PCB administrations for his violation of the Code of Conduct under the Players’ Welfare Policy.
Nawaz met with PCB president Zaka Ashraf, who is also the chairman of the PCB’s Cricket Management Committee, in Lahore on Tuesday in an effort to address the halted ex gratia payments. Nawaz is not doing well after a health scare in London last year.
He told the PCB that he was following the Code of Conduct.
In the presence of Misbah ul Haq, the chairman of the Cricket Technical Committee, and member Muhammad Hafeez, Ashraf presented a cheque to Nawaz to cover the unpaid invoices.
Nawaz received the cash under the PCB’s Players’ Welfare Policy, and the PCB Chief pledged unwavering support for retired players.
Ashraf said it was sad that previous administrations had used the PCB’s funds to make amends for past wrongdoings.
“No cricketer should have to go through what Nawaz had to go through, and I want to reassure every former and current cricketer, international or domestic, that the PCB regards them as an asset and will look after them at every stage of their lives and in every way possible.” They deserve to be cherished and respected by their cricket board.” Najam Sethi, the Chairman of the Board, filed a libel suit against Nawaz for levelling unfounded claims against him. Nawaz has previously petitioned the board to end the dispute.
Nawaz stated that he was relieved to see the subject handled due to his health issues.
From 1969 to 1984, he played 55 Tests and 45 One-Day Internationals for Pakistan. He is most known for his remarkable figures of 9 for 86 against Australia in Melbourne in 1979, when he claimed seven wickets for one run at one point to set up a memorable triumph.
