Mehidy Hasan and Shanto both score their first Asia Cup tonnes as Bangladesh defeats Afghanistan by 89 runs

At the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, Bangladesh pacers combined for eight wickets as the Tigers defeated Afghanistan by 89 runs in their second and final Asia Cup group-stage match.

Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by 89 runs on Sunday to remain in contention for the Asia Cup Super 4 stage. Bangladesh batted first and amassed 334 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs, with Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz hitting hundreds, before bowling Afghanistan out for 245 in 44.3 overs for a huge win.

Bangladesh’s major wicket takers were Taskin Ahmed (4/44) and Shoriful Islam (3/36) after they had lost their opening match by five runs to Sri Lanka. Earlier, Mehidy, who was promoted to open the innings, was run out after making 112 off 119 balls, while Shanto made 104 off 105 balls before being run out.
Mehidy and Shanto accumulated 194 runs off 190 balls for the third wicket before the former was forced to leave the pitch due to a hand injury. On a flat pitch, Afghanistan’s bowlers struggled to make inroads, with Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Gulbadin Naib each getting one wicket.
Bangladesh: 334 for 5 in 50 overs (Mehidy Hasan Miraz 112 not out, Najmul Hossain Shanto 104; Mujeeb Ur Rahman 1/62, Gulbadin Naib 1/62).

Afghanistan: 245 all out in 44.3 overs (Ibrahim Zadran 75, Hashmatullah Shahidi 51; Shoriful Islam 3/36, Taskin Ahmed 4/44).
