Prathamesh Jawkar, an Indian compound archer, narrowly lost to Danish archer Mathias Fullerton in a nail-biting shoot-off to take home the silver medal in his first “World Cup Final.”
Jawkar, who won the Shanghai World Cup after shocking world No. 1 and defending champion Mike Schloesser twice in four months to go to the final, was defeated by Fullerton 148-148 (10-10*) because Fullerton’s arrow was determined to be closer to the centre than Jawkar’s.
The Indian 20-year-old dropped one point in the first round of their final match here late on Saturday, giving the Danish archer an early lead.
Having fallen down 89-90 at the halfway point, Jawkar evened up the score going into the final round by shooting 30 out of a possible 30 points.
The Indian narrowly missed Fullerton’s arrow in the tiebreaker, resulting in a deadlock.
The Maharashtra archer defeated Schloesser by one point (150-149) in the semifinals thanks to a faultless 150 out of 150-point performance.
The victory also prevented a hat-trick of Dutchmen winning the World Cup Final.
In 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022, Schloesser won four “World Cup Finals.”
In four months, Jawkar had defeated the “Mr Perfectionist” twice. Jawakar defeated the Dutch heavyweight in the Shanghai World Cup final in May by a score of 149-148.
Schloesser, though, was able to bring it in the bronze medal playoff, as he defeated veteran Abhishek Verma 150-149 to deny India a second medal.
When Verma advanced to the third-place playoff by defeating Sawyer Sullivan of the USA 146-146 (10-9) in the quarterfinals, he was aiming for a second World Cup Final bronze medal.
Verma was defeated 147-150 by the eventual winner Fullerton in the semifinal.
Jawkar got things going in a bad way by defeating Miguel Becerra, a representative of the home nation, 149-141 in the quarterfinal with just one point dropped. The Indian shot 15 arrows flawlessly, missing the centre only once, and that was in the penultimate round.
With the victory, Jawkar will face Dutch sensation Schloesser in the semifinals for the second time in four months.
