India has now won 71 medals at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, surpassing their prior high of 70 at the 2018 Asiad.

The archery team of Ojas Pravin and Jyothi Surekha won the gold medal in the mixed team compound final at the Asian Games 2023 on Wednesday, surpassing the Indian delegation’s previous record of 70 medals in the competition’s history. They defeated the South Korean team. India took home 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze medals overall from the 2018 Games. In the 2023 competition, the Indian team has already won 16 gold, 26 silver, and 29 bronze medals, with a few more medals already guaranteed in various competitions.

Shooting and Archery have by far been India’s top medal events at the Asian Games in terms of the number of medals won in each respective sport. India won a total of 22 medals in shooting, while the country has already collected 23 medals in athletics, with more still to come.

Early on Wednesday, Indian race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo won a bronze medal in the 35-kilometer mixed race walk competition, helping India match their Jakarta Games result.

Then, the mixed team gold medal was won by compound archers Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam, giving India its 71st medal overall.

Bhupender Singh Bajwa, India’s chef de mission, said: “It is with great satisfaction that I would like to declare that India has forged its image with the biggest ever medal haul in the Asian Games by reaching the 70 mark in medal tally and there are more to come.

In an effort to win more than 100 medals at the continental competition, India deployed its largest-ever delegation.

The catchphrase for India’s performance at the Hangzhou Games has been “Aab ki Baar, Sau Paar,” which translates to “crossing 100 medals this time.”

Over four days of competition are still available, and India presently holds 16 gold, 26 silver, and 29 bronze medals.
