Bishan Singh Bedi, a former spinner for India, passed away at the age of 77.

Former India captain and renowned spinner Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on Monday at the age of 77. His wife Anju and two children, Angad and Neha, survive him.

One of India’s most renowned cricketers, Bedi played in 12 years, winning 67 Test matches between 1967 and 1979. The most deadly spin four in Indian cricket history, consisting of Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar, and S. Venkataraghavan, transformed spin bowling techniques across the globe.

Winner of the 1970 Padma Shri, Bedi went on to lead India for 22 Test matches and participated in India’s inaugural One-Day International (ODI) against East Africa in 1975, bowling 12 overs with 8 maidens, conceding 6 runs and taking 1 wicket. In general, Bedi is regarded as the best left-arm spinner in the league.

“Bishan Singh Bedi ji, a former Indian cricket team captain and bowler who will always be remembered with fondness, is no longer with us. The cricket world has suffered a great loss with this really terrible news. He set up several training camps in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, he used to reside in the Indian dressing room when this stadium was under construction. Here he would remain to get the players ready. He always had great relations with Delhi and Punjab, but he also had a special place in his heart for Himachal Pradesh. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur told news sources, “My condolences to his entire family.”
