Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar broke Sachin Tendulkar’s 14-year-old record against New Zealand in Nelson on Wednesday. Soumya hit 169 runs off 151 balls with a strike rate of 111.92. In the first inning, the left-handed batsman hit 22 fours and two sixes against the Kiwi bowling assault. The 30-year-old’s innings against New Zealand helped him break Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI runs by a player from the subcontinent in New Zealand.

In 2009, the ‘Master Blaster’ batted unbeaten for 163 runs against the Kiwis in Christchurch. He also scored the most runs by a Bangladesh batsman on an away ground in the ODI format.

At Saxton Oval, New Zealand chose to field first after winning the toss prior to the game.

Among his teammates, Soumya Sarkar (169 runs from 151 balls) was the only player who stood out, since none of the other players were able to score more than 50 runs in the opening frame. In the middle order, wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim (45 runs from 57 balls) was crucial in helping the ‘Bengal Tigers’ achieve 291 points.

Conversely, Kiwi bowlers William ORourke and Jacob Duffy spearheaded the attack, each taking three wickets in their respective periods. Aside from them, Adithya Ashok, Josh Clarkson, and Adam Milne each claimed one wicket.

In order to secure their second straight victory in the three-match ODI series, New Zealand must score 292 runs in 50 overs during the run chase.
