The former England batter took over as head coach in July 2022, and his 18-month stint ended in 2023.

Afghanistan’s cricket board stated that head coach Jonathan Trott’s contract has been extended for another year, rewarding him for important contributions to the team’s improvement and development. The former England batter’s 18-month career as head coach ended in 2023, after he took charge in July 2022. Afghanistan had great achievement and gained multiple victories under his leadership.

This featured the team’s outstanding performance at the T20 Asia Cup 2022, its first international victory, a T20I series win over Pakistan, and their first-ever ODI series win over Bangladesh.

Afghanistan also had a strong ODI World Cup campaign last year, defeating Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands.

Afghanistan is presently playing the host team in a three-match Twenty20 International series in the United Arab Emirates.

After that, on January 11–17, they are expected to fly to India for a three-match Twenty20 International series.

With multiple bilateral tours planned, including a participation in the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA in June, the team has an exciting year ahead of them.
