Fabian Allen, a West Indies all-rounder, was robbed and assaulted at gunpoint outside the Paarl Royals hotel in Johannesburg.

The ongoing SA20 League playoffs have begun, with four of the six clubs advancing to the knockout round. Durban Super Giants and Sunrisers Eastern Cape will compete in the Qualifier 1 match on Tuesday, while Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings will face off in the Eliminator on Wednesday. However, on the eve of the first Playoff game, a horrific event surfaced, raising questions about the South African league’s player security.

According to news sources, West Indies all-rounder Fabian Allen was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint outside the Paarl Royals team hotel in Johannesburg.

It was also reported that the 28-year-old all-rounder was attacked by intruders armed with a gun near the prestigious Sandton Sun Hotel. Allen’s phone and personal things, including a bag, were also forcibly seized.

“Our head coach, Andre Coley, also from Jamaica, contacted Fabian. Contact was successfully established through Obed McCoy (another West Indies international). He is fine. A top CWI official told news sources that CSA (Cricket South Africa) and his team, Paarl Royals, might give further information if it is available.

The Royals won five matches in the SA20 2023-24 group stage, finishing third in the points table.

Allen, a Caribbean player, has played 20 ODIs and 34 T20Is, scoring 200 and 267 runs, respectively. He also took seven wickets in One-Day Internationals and 24 wickets in Twenty20 Internationals.
