Virat Kohli’s spot in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad is increasingly precarious.
Although there are still a few months until the T20 World Cup 2024, Virat Kohli’s role in the Indian squad has returned to the forefront. The senior batsman performed admirably for the national squad in the T20 World Cup 2022, but he has yet to persuade selectors of his ability to switch gears in the manner required by current T20 cricket. Though players’ positions in the T20 squad will be determined by the IPL 2024 campaign, a report claims that chief selector Ajit Agarkar has been instructed to ‘convince’ Virat to make room for new players in the team.According to The Telegraph, Virat was warned by Agarkar that he needed to adjust his approach. The chat led Kohli to bat more aggressively in T20Is against Afghanistan, but he only scored 29 runs in one match.
The report goes on to say that the selectors believe the slow wickets in the West Indies will not suit Kohli’s natural game as a batter. As a result, the selection committee has been considering potential choices for the signature event.
Agarkar, the top selector, has reportedly taken on the responsibility of convincing Kohli that he must make way for the new generation in the shortest format.
Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, and Shivam Dube are among the players that could be employed in the middle order if Kohli departs. However, all is not lost for Kohli. It is also believed that Virat’s fortunes could improve if he has an outstanding season with the Royal Challengers Bangalore and demonstrates to the selectors that he can play in the current T20 format.
However, Kohli has not yet joined the RCB camp ahead of the IPL 2024 season. He missed the entire England Test series due to his kid Akaay’s birth.
