Yash Thakur’s speed unsettled the Gujarat Titans, and the Lucknow Super Giants won by a comfortable 33 runs.
Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill stated after his team’s 33-run loss against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match that his team gave a terrible batting performance while chasing an easy target on a batting-friendly pitch. On Sunday at Ekana Cricket Stadium, Yash Thakur’s pace rattled Gujarat Titans as the Lucknow Super Giants defeated them by 33 runs in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
After the loss, Gill said during the post-match presentation, “It was a good wicket to bat on, but we had a poor batting performance. We had a good start, but we lost wickets in the middle and couldn’t recover. Our bowlers were outstanding, limiting them to 160-odd runs; however, our batters fell short.
When asked about missing David Miller because of injury, Gill replied: “Miller is a kind of a player who can change a game in a couple of overs, because I think this total was very gettable for us. (On his dismissal) I thought it was the last over of the powerplay and I just wanted to make the most of it, just that I missed that ball as I tried to play a bit too square. It was tremendous to watch our bowlers bowl, we were looking forward to restricting them around 160-165.” LSG elected to bat first after winning the toss.
At one time the hosts were down to 18/2. LSG was once again in a respectable position after a 73-run partnership between captain KL Rahul (33 in 31 balls, with three fours) and Marcus Stoinis (58 in 43 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes).
Afterwards, LSG scored a respectable 163/5 in their 20 overs thanks to blows from Nicholas Pooran (32* in 22 balls, with three sixes) and Ayush Badoni (20 in 11 balls, with three fours).
Among the wickets for GT were Umesh Yadav (2/22) and Rashid Khan (1/28).
GT, who were chasing 164 runs, got off to a good start thanks to captain Shubman Gill (19 in 21 balls, two fours) and Sai Sudharsan (31 in 23 balls, four boundaries) who put together a 54-run opening stand. However, they were destroyed by bowler Yash Thakur’s five-wicket haul (5/30) and Krunal Pandya’s economical 3/11. GT lost by 33 runs after being skittled out for 130 in 18.5 overs, despite a valiant effort by Rahul Tewatia (30 in 25 balls, including two fours and two sixes).
Thakur was named “Player of the Match” for his fifer. With three victories and a setback, LSG has six points, good for third place on the points table. With two wins and three losses, GT sits in seventh position. They’ve scored four points in all.
