Lanning stated that she struggled with weight loss and insomnia, prompting her to take a vacation from cricket in 2022 before eventually quitting the sport in November last year.

Meg Lanning, former Australia women’s captain, revealed that she struggled with weight loss and insomnia before abruptly retiring from international cricket last year.Lanning, who has won the T20 World Cup five times and the 50-overs World Cup twice, withdrew from the Women’s Ashes last year due to medical concerns and left the national squad in November.

The 32-year-old revealed on the Howie Games podcast that she was dealing with an identity issue outside of the sport, and that her diet and training routine had become unbalanced.

“It just kind of went out of control,” Lanning recalled. “I was not in a position to play cricket, go on tour, and deliver the mental and physical dedication needed for that Ashes series. I dropped from 64 kg to roughly 57 kg. The ratios were severely distorted. Everything was just off, and I kept falling. That must end at some time.
Among the most decorated players in the history of the sport, Lanning took a lengthy sabbatical in 2022 before coming back the following year to help Australia win the T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Lanning claimed that she had experienced sleeplessness as well, at one time only managing a few hours of sleep every night. She remarked, “I hated nighttime because I knew I would go to bed and not be able to sleep.”
“I would be furious about that.” All I would do was become more upset with myself. You are powerless if you are unable to sleep.
Lanning has maintained her participation in the lucrative Women’s Premier League and domestic T20 cricket in India, but she has ruled out going back to the national team.In December, Lanning was replaced as Australia’s captain by wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy.
