Rohit’s Form Is a Concern, Hardik’s Is a Positive
The performance of the Indian players since they were included in the T20 World Cup squad is examined here.On Tuesday, April 30, the Indian cricket team revealed their 15-man selection for the T20 World Cup 2024, which would be hosted in the United States and the West Indies. Since then, every one of the 15 players chosen for the Indian team to compete in the T20 World Cup has participated in at least one Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match for their respective teams. Here, we examine these Indian players’ performance after being included in the T20 World Cup squad.
Rohit Sharma (captain)
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has registered a string of low scores since the announcement of the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. Mumbai Indians’ star opening batter scored just four runs off five balls against Lucknow Super Giants on the very day the squad was announced. Two days later, Rohit managed 12-ball 11 against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede. The right-handed opener was once again dismissed cheaply as he scored four runs against SunRisers Hyderabad in MI’s previous outing on May 6. Overall, Rohit has scored just 19 runs in three matches since the squad announcement.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Flamboyant left-handed batter Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrated his inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad with a scintillating fifty against SunRisers Hyderabad. Chasing 202, Rajasthan Royals’ dashing opener slammed 67 off 40 balls, laced with seven fours and two sixes. Despite his brilliant half-century, RR lost the game by just one run in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Jaiswal scored just four runs against Delhi Capitals in RR’s previous fixture. Since the squad announcement, the 22-year-old has scored 71 runs in two games.
Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has been in excellent form in the ongoing Indian Premier League. Kohli, who opened the batting for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, continued his strong form by scoring a 27-ball 42 against Gujarat Titans before hitting a century against Punjab Kings. However, it should be noted that Virat was dropped twice while at the crease. Rajat Patidar also provided adequate support for Kohli, scoring a half-century to help RCB post 241/7.
Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav, India’s swashbuckling batter, has had some spectacular performances since the T20 World Cup selection was announced. Mumbai Indians’ seasoned hitter scored a match-winning hundred against SunRisers Hyderabad in their most recent encounter. MI were reduced to 31/3 after 4.1 overs while chasing SRH’s 173/8. Batting at number four, Suryakumar hit 102 not out in 51 balls to lead MI to a seven-wicket victory at Wankhede. Previously, the right-handed hitter smashed a 35-ball 56 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, as other MI batters struggled on the night. However, he was dismissed for ten against the Lucknow Super Giants on the day the selection was revealed. Suryakumar has totaled 168 runs in three games since the squad release.
Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper)
Rishabh Pant, captain of the Delhi Capitals, has been a prominent wicketkeeper-batter in the IPL 2024. The hard-hitting southpaw has scored 413 runs in 12 games, averaging 41.30 and striking out 156.43. This season, he’s hit three 50s. Pant has played only one game for India since the T20 World Cup selection was announced, against the Rajasthan Royals in Delhi. Batting at No.5, the southpaw hit 15 off 13 balls against RR before falling to Yuzvendra Chahal. His cameo helped DC reach a huge 221/8, which they later defended and won by 20 runs.
Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper)
KL Rahul lost to Sanju Samson in the race to join India’s 15-man T20 World Cup team. The skipper of the Rajasthan Royals was out of the game against SunRisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad for a duck after the announcement. But in RR’s previous matchup against Delhi Capitals, Samson quickly recovered. Samson led from the front while chasing 222, hitting 86 off of just 46 balls to keep RR in the chase. He knocked in six maximums and eight fours. Samson had a fantastic knock, but RR was still 20 runs short.
Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya, MI captain, has delivered a few outstanding bowling performances since the T20 World Cup selection was announced. Hardik was dismissed for a golden duck against Lucknow Super Giants on the same day as the squad was named. Defending 144, India’s top all-rounder took crucial wickets of KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda to finish with numbers of 2/26. Hardik then got two wickets against the Kolkata Knight Riders, while allowing 44 runs in four overs. He continued to struggle with his batting, scoring only one run at Wankhede. In their most recent game, Hardik got three wickets for 31 runs to help MI restrict SRH to 173/8. MI eventually chased down the goal in 17.2 overs thanks to Suryakumar’s ton.
Shivam Dube
Shivam Dube of the Chennai Super Kings has lost form dramatically since being named to India’s T20 World Cup squad. The hard-hitting left-hander was knocked for a duck on the opening delivery against Punjab Kings in Chennai before getting dismissed for 13 off 21 balls against Gujarat in Ahmedabad. On the positive side, Dube dismissed Jonny Bairstow in Chennai for his first wicket in IPL 2024, when CSK faced PBKS in Dharamsala.
Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja, India’s premier all-rounder, has had a mixed bag since the 15-member T20 World Cup 2024 roster was announced. The 35-year-old scored only two runs off four deliveries and took no wickets against the Punjab Kings in Chennai. Later in Dharamsala, Jadeja was named Player of the Match for his overall performance against the Punjab Kings. Jadeja then scored a 10-ball 18 against Gujarat, and CSK lost.
Axar Patel
Axar Patel, a spin-bowling all-rounder, has contributed with both bat and ball in his sole game since the selection release. Batting at No.4, Delhi Capitals all-rounder Axar hit 15 off 10 balls against the Rajasthan Royals to assist his team amass 221/8 in 20 overs. Later, Axar removed Jos Buttler for 1/25, leading the Capitals to a 20-run victory in Delhi.
Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav, a left-arm wrist spinner, has been one of the star bowlers in the IPL 2024. The 29-year-old has 14 wickets in nine outings for an average of 20.64 and an economy rate of 8.25. Kuldeep has played only one game for the Delhi Capitals since India’s T20 World Cup selection was announced. Defending 222 against RR, Kuldeep dismissed Donovan Ferreira and Ravichandran Ashwin in the 18th over to help DC win convincingly.
Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal, India’s T20 World Cup squad member, has been pricey in both of his games after the announcement. SunRisers Hyderabad hitters hammered Chahal all over the place, allowing 62 runs in four overs in Hyderabad. Later, against the Delhi Capitals, Chahal grabbed Rishabh Pant’s wicket. However, the 33-year-old allowed 48 runs in his four overs.
Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian cricket team’s bowling spearhead, has sustained his strong form even after the T20 World Cup selection was announced. Bumrah had an economical stretch of 0 for 17 against Lucknow Super Giants while defending only 144. Bumrah was MI’s wrecker-in-chief against the Kolkata Knight Riders, picking up three wickets for 18 runs in 3.5 overs to help the team finish on 169. India’s right-arm bowler once again bowled economically against an in-form SunRisers Hyderabad batting lineup. Bumrah finished with statistics of 1:23. He currently holds the Purple Cap for IPL 2024, having taken 18 wickets in 12 matches.
Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj, an Indian fast bowler, has played two games since the 15-man T20 World Cup 2024 roster was announced. Siraj bowled an outstanding stint for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against last season’s finalist Gujarat Titans on May 4 at Bengaluru’s M.Chinnaswamy Stadium. Siraj completed with 2/29 to help GT reach 147 in 19.3 overs. Siraj then claimed three wickets for 43 runs against the Punjab Kings in Dharamsala.
Arshdeep Singh
Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm pacer, has struggled since being included to India’s T20 World Cup roster. While Punjab Kings’ standout pacer Arshdeep Singh dismissed Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, he surrendered 52 runs in four overs in Chennai. Later, against the same opponents at Dharamsala, Arshdeep was once again expensive, conceding 42 runs in four overs. Even against RCB, Arshdeep conceded 41 runs in just three overs.
