Here is why he refused

Following the ODI World Cup 2023, Rahul Dravid signed an extension as Team India’s head coach. He does not, however, intend to continue in the job beyond the T20 World Cup in 2024.The BCCI has began the search for a new head coach for India’s men’s cricket squad. With Rahul Dravid’s contract set to end after the T20 World Cup in 2024, the board has issued a call for new applicants, though Dravid is still entitled to apply. However, it has been stated that the former batter for India has already made up his mind and is not eager to stay on the team after the forthcoming T20 World Cup.

According to news reports, Dravid will not reapply for the position, having determined long ago that he does not want to continue as the team’s head coach beyond his present tenure. According to the article, some senior members of the squad asked Dravid to continue as India’s Test coach for another year, but he declined, having previously decided that the extension he signed after the ODI World Cup 2023 would be his last.

If Dravid had agreed to continue as India’s Test coach, the BCCI might have chosen to appoint format-specific coaches. However, it is no longer the case.

Despite the fact that the search for a new coach is still ongoing, VVS Laxman’s name has been mentioned frequently. In Dravid’s absence, the former India batter has guided the team on a few previous times as head coach. However, he is reportedly not the front-runner for the position as permanent head coach.

There have been indications that the BCCI is considering a few names from overseas. The head coach position will also take into account candidates from outside the country, as previously indicated by Jay Shah, the board secretary.

“We don’t know if the new coach will be foreign or Indian. As a worldwide organization, the CAC will have the last say,” Jay Shah had stated.

The Indian Premier League teams that Stephen Fleming and Ricky Ponting, who are currently coaching the Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals, respectively, are leading candidates, according to early indications. Another foreign coach who toyed with the notion of leading the Indian team is Justin Langer, the coach of the Lucknow Super Giants.
