Following Virat Kohli’s contentious dismissal as captain, Rohit Sharma assumed leadership of India in all three forms of cricket.

After defeating South Africa in the final, the Rohit Sharma-led team of Indian cricketers achieved their first-ever high in an ICC competition. They won the T20 World Cup-2024. After winning the Champions Trophy in 2013 under MS Dhoni, the achievement brought India its first world crown. As captain, Rohit Sharma gave much-needed victory to India, but Virat Kohli was unable to win an ICC trophy for his team. But when Rohit succeeded Virat as the team’s captain, things weren’t going well in the world of Indian cricket. The decision actually drew a lot of criticism for Sourav Ganguly, the president of the BCCI at the time.

Ganguly reminded everyone that he was the one who suggested giving the Hitman the captaincy, even as the whole country of India rejoices in Rohit Sharma’s triumph as the team’s captain.

“I received backlash after giving Rohit the captaincy. And nobody is mistreating me now that we’ve won a trophy under his leadership. Ganguly said to the Bangla publication AajKaal, “Everyone has forgotten that I made him the captain.”

Kohli was ousted as the ODI captain, even though he resigned from the T20I captaincy himself. After Virat announced his resignation as India’s Test captain shortly after, the BCCI chose to elevate Rohit to the position for all three formats.

Ganguly received a great deal of criticism for the way the captaincy change was handled by the board, as well as from cricket fans and alumni.Ganguly has chosen to remind people who were cheering on India’s victory in the T20 World Cup but were also criticizing him. After Rohit’s promotion, Ganguly had to deal with a lot of hate, trolling, and queries on social media.

Both Virat and Rohit chose to give up playing Twenty20 international cricket after India won the World Cup. While Rohit will still be leading in ODIs and Tests, India will have a new coach in the shorter format.
