Clive Madande, Zimbabwe’s wicketkeeper, shattered a 90-year-old record by conceding 42 byes in a Test against Ireland.
Clive Madande, the wicketkeeper for Zimbabwe, established an unprecedented record on Friday when he gave up 42 byes in an innings of Test cricket against Ireland. Ireland struck 250 in response to Zimbabwe’s 210, and the runs conceded by the 24-year-old Madande—who had a difficult debut after being out for a duck on Thursday’s opening day at Stormont—were greater than their 40-run advantage in the first innings. He had to contend with his bowlers sending multiple deliveries down the legside and late swing after the ball had passed the bat, so he wasn’t totally to blame for the byes. Madande found solace in the fact that the record he broke was set by Les Ames of England, who is recognized as one of the sport’s best wicketkeeper-batsmen. In a 1934 Test match at The Oval, Australia amassed 327 runs, and Ames handed out 37 byes.In Test cricket history, this marked the first instance in which a wicketkeeper let up over 40 byes.
Without a 47-run partnership between Andy McBrine (28) and Matthew Humphreys (27 not out), Zimbabwe may have been ahead in the first innings.
After batting out the last fifteen minutes, Joylord Gumbie and Prince Masvaure reduced Zimbabwe’s second innings score to 12-0 at stumps on a rain-soaked second day of this one-off Test, a 28-run deficit.
Prior to this, Peter Moor, a former Zimbabwe international, led Ireland in scoring with 79.
It was the greatest Test score ever by an Ireland opener in Tests, and Moor was just four points off his career best, which he achieved in 2018 when playing for Zimbabwe.
In just his second game at this level, Zimbabwe’s Tanaka Chivanga (3-39) claimed his maiden three Test wickets, and fellow pacer Blessing Muzarabani also excelled with 3-53.
