India defeated Sri Lanka by 43 runs in their first T20 international on Saturday at the Pallekele Stadium. When asked to bat, India made an impressive 213 for seven before bowling the hosts out for 170 in 19.2 overs. Riyan Parag captured three wickets for five runs, while Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh each claimed two.
Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka top-scored with 79 off 48 balls, while opening partner Kusal Mendis contributed 45.
Suryakumar Yadav, the new Indian captain, led from the front with a 26-ball 58 after openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (40 off 21 balls) and Shubman Gill (34 off 16 balls) combined for 74 runs in six overs.

After scoring 49 in 33 balls, Rishabh Pant was just short of a half-century. On a day when Sri Lanka dropped a few catches, pacer Matheesha Pathirana emerged as the team’s most successful bowler with figures of 4/40 in four overs.
