The Indian team led by Rohit Sharma lost the series 0-2 after suffering a humiliating loss to Sri Lanka in the third and final ODI.
In the third and final ODI, Rohit Sharma’s Indian team was humiliated by Sri Lanka, losing the series 0-2 in the process. Sharma has now become just the third Indian skipper to lose an ODI bilateral series against the island nation, joining the esteemed ranks of the likes of the late Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin.
Following a 27-year run in which they had never lost a bilateral ODI series against their neighbor, India lost the third ODI by 110 runs on August 7, 2024, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
In 1997, while Tendulkar was captain, India last lost an ODI series to the Lankan Lions. It was Azharuddin, the former captain of India, who lost a series against Sri Lanka in 1993.With seven wickets lost in their fifty overs, Charith Asalanka’s Sri Lanka amassed 248 runs. With the bat, the hosts’ best performances were Avishka Fernando (96), Kusal Mendis (59), and Pathum Nissanka (45).
In reply, India’s batting order collapsed, and in just 26.1 overs, they were dismissed for just 138 runs. The visitors’ main highlights were an innings of thirty runs from Washington Sundar and a 35-run performance by Sharma.
