Internet Divided by Sourav Ganguly’s Gesture During Debate Over Horror Comment on Kolkata Rape

Sourav Ganguly has adopted a novel strategy to express his opinions over the horrific Kolkata rape-murder case.

Former India captain and resident of Kolkata Sourav Ganguly has now opted to express his position in a new way in response to accusations that he downplayed the seriousness of the horrifying rape and murder case of doctor Moumita Debnath in Kolkata. Ganguly said on Saturday that his remarks had been misinterpreted. Ganguly had been widely criticised for supposedly referring to the rape and murder as a “stray incident.” Ganguly has now, seemingly in a show of unity, blackened out his DP on the social media platform “X,” although this has sparked a range of other responses.

Ganguly modified his profile picture to dark on Monday night and wrote the hashtag ‘New Profile Pic’ as a caption. Not all users seemed to agree with Ganguly’s assertion that his purpose was to demonstrate sympathy and solidarity with the victim and the investigation that followed.
Rather than confront the matter head-on, many opted to criticize the former captain of India for such an action.

Ganguly has already expressed concern that his early remarks could have been misunderstood or misread.

I’m not sure how my statement from last Sunday was taken or understood. As I mentioned before, it’s a very bad thing. The CBI and police are currently looking into the situation. Ganguly told reporters, “What has transpired is quite disgusting.

“The penalty ought to be so severe that nobody would ever dare do the same act in their lifetime. That is a crucial point. “Severe punishment is necessary,” he had continued.

Two of the CBI’s best female officers, who have previously handled a number of these high-profile cases with notable success, have now taken on the task of investigating the rape-murder case involving the doctor from Kolkata. Overall charge goes to Jharkhand-born IPS officer Sampat Meena, who worked on the Unnao rape case and the Hathras rape-murder case in 1994. Seema Pahuja, an officer who was a member of the Hathras investigating team, is beside her.
