Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered Bangladesh bowlers all over the park, helping Team India break the global record for the fastest Test team fifty.

India’s opening batsmen Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal broke the Test cricket world record when they came out to bat against Bangladesh on Day 4 of the second Test in Kanpur. After knocking Bangladesh out for 233 runs in the first innings, Rohit and Jaiswal demonstrated aggressive intent from ball one, slamming the opposing team’s bowlers all over the field. Rohit and Jaiswal largely dealt in fours and sixes, scoring 50 runs in just three overs. It was the first time a team scored 50 runs in the opening three overs of Test cricket since records began.

England previously held the record for the fastest Test fifty, scoring it in 26 balls. However, the Indian team broke the record by a significant margin, completing their half-century in just 18 balls. Earlier this year, England set a record against the West Indies at Trent Bridge.

India’s previous quickest team fifty came against England in Chennai in 2008. That match saw the Indian team score 50 runs in 5.2 overs.

Fastest Team 50 Test Cricket:

3.0 Overs – India vs BAN, Kanpur, 2024

4.2 Overs – England vs WI, Nottingham, 2024

4.3 Overs – England vs SA, The Oval, 1994

4.6 Overs – England vs SL, Manchester, 2002

5.2 Overs – Sri Lanka vs PAK, Karachi, 2004

5.3 Overs – India vs ENG, Chennai, 2008

India went on to break the global record for the fastest team hundred in Test cricket, reaching the triple digits in just 61 balls (10.1 overs), surpassing their own mark. In 2023, India struck a century as a team against the West Indies in 12.2 overs.

In Test cricket, the traditional format of the game, the England cricket team’s recent attacking exploits have earned them the nickname ‘Bazball’. However, with their performance against Bangladesh in the first three overs, Team India shown that they can bat in any gear depending on the game situation.

Earlier, on the fourth day of the second Test, India dismissed Bangladesh for 233 in their first innings. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 107, as Bangladesh scored their runs in 74.2 overs.

Bangladesh resumed at 205 for 6 and added only 28 runs for the loss of four wickets in the post-lunch session.

Jasprit Bumrah (3/50) took three wickets for India, while Akash Deep (2/43), Ravichandran Ashwin (2/45) and Mohammed Siraj (2/57) combined for six wickets. Ravindra Jadeja achieved 300 Test wickets.
