Jonathan Trott will remain the head coach of the Afghanistan men team until 2025

Following a successful 2024 season that included the team’s first-ever appearance in a World Cup semi-final, the ACB has extended his contract by 12 months.

Jonathan Trott will remain the head coach of the Afghanistan men till the end of 2025. The ODI portion of Afghanistan’s multi-format tour of Zimbabwe will be his next duty; however, for personal reasons, he will not be leading the other formats. In his place, Nawroz Mangal will serve as assistant coach and Hamid Hassan as head coach.

Trott’s contract was extended by the Afghanistan Cricket Board by a another 12 months after the team had a very successful 2024. After defeating Australia and New Zealand in the Group- and Super-Eights stages of the T20 competition in the USA and the West Indies, Afghanistan made their first-ever appearance in the World Cup semi-finals that year. They have since defeated Bangladesh and South Africa in Sharjah in ODI series.The Champions Trophy will be Afghanistan’s first big international competition the following year. After winning matches against England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, they placed in the top eight of the 2023 ODI World Cup points standings, earning them a spot in the tournament.

In July 2022, Trott started an 18-month term that was extended by one year in January 2024. In the 34 ODIs and 20 T20Is Afghanistan has played since his appointment, they have won 14 and 20, respectively. 

Trott is serving as head coach for the first time with Afghanistan. Throughout the 2021 T20 World Cup, he served as a consultant for Scotland. In his playing career, he amassed 3835 runs at an average of 44.08 in 52 Test matches and played a significant role in England’s 2010–11 away Ashes triumph. He amassed 2819 runs at an average of 51.25 in ODI cricket, including four hundreds and 22 fifties.
