Ravichandran Ashwin’s father stated on Thursday that ‘humiliation’ could be one of the reasons for the spinner’s premature retirement.
Ravichandran Ashwin has broken his silence on a significant revelation made by his father, Ravichandran, the day after the spin legend abruptly withdrew from international cricket. With two Tests remaining in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin decided to retire from international cricket following the third India vs Australia Test tie in Brisbane. Ashwin, the world’s leading Test wicket-taker among active players with 537 scalps, said immediately after the match that he will no again play international cricket.
His father, Ravichandran, claimed on Thursday that ‘humiliation’ could be one of the reasons for his sudden departure. Ashwin has only appeared in one of the three BGT Tests so far.
“There’s no doubt about it (being emotional for the family), because he was on the field for over 14-15 years. The rapid adjustments and retirement came as such a shock. At the same time, we expected it because humiliation was occurring. How long can he put up with all of that? “He probably would have made his own decision,” Ravichandran said News sources.
“Actually, I also found out at the last minute. I had no idea what was going through his thoughts. He made an announcement just now. I was also delighted to receive it. That made me feel absolutely nothing. However, I felt both thrilled and sad about the way he announced his retirement because he ought to have gone on.
“Ashwin’s wish to retire is his own, and I cannot impede on that, but there may be a variety of reasons for his actions. Ashwin is the only one who knows; perhaps humiliation.
