On Wednesday, January 8, New Zealand’s legendary white-ball player Martin Guptill declared his retirement from international cricket. The 38-year-old played in 367 matches for New Zealand (198 ODIs, 122 T20Is, and 47 Tests), breaking multiple white-ball batting records and amassing 23 hundreds in all three forms. As the Auckland Aces’ current captain, Guptill will likely stay active in T20 franchise cricket for some time to come.
With 3,531 runs from 122 T20I matches, Guptill became New Zealand’s top T20I run scorer at the end of his 14-year international career (2009–2022). His 7,346 ODI runs put him third on the ODI list, after Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylor.He looked back on his international career with pride, stating that playing for New Zealand for 14 years was the greatest honor and privilege.
