With only 31 runs in five innings against Australia, Rohit Sharma’s decision to withdraw from the Sydney Test heightened rumors about his future as an international player.
Sanjay Manjrekar, a former batsman for India, stated that he believes Rohit Sharma should have the freedom to choose when to leave international cricket, but he also believes the selectors should have some input. Even though Rohit only scored 31 runs in five innings during India’s 3-1 Test series loss in Australia, his decision to withdraw from the Sydney Test heightened rumors about his future as an international player.
“I think Rohit Sharma will determine his future in Indian cricket, just like Tendulkar did. It is up to the athlete to decide how long they want to play or how much more they want to contribute; retirement is a personal choice. But in the end, it’s also up to the selectors—in this case, Mr. Ajit Agarkar and his group,” Manjrekar stated during a Star Sports episode of the “Deep Point” podcast.
Deep Dasgupta, a former India batsman and wicketkeeper, believes that Rohit and Kohli are not comparable and that the former must resolve some issues in order to secure his spot in the team.Virat and Rohit shouldn’t be grouped together. Similar to the earlier age of Indian cricket, when Rahul (Dravid) and Sachin (Tendulkar) were distinct, each player must be assessed separately.
“The IPL and the next five months of mostly international white-ball cricket will be very important for Rohit. His performances in these formats will carry a significant amount of weight. On top of that, things like his Champions Trophy performance, fitness levels, and first-class cricket form will also be significant. The selectors make the ultimate decision.
