During the first Test, he became the 15th player in the format to reach 10,000 runs, and the fourth from his country, behind Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting, respectively.
Smith currently stands second among active players, trailing Joe Root, who has 12,972 Test runs. The 35-year-old Australian came in to bat after the visitors had slumped to 37 for two, with Marnus Labuschagne once again failing to make an impact. Smith and wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey put on a 150-run partnership to help Australia pass Sri Lanka’s first-innings total of 257 with seven wickets in hand.
