Bethell, 21, scored 51 in the first loss last week, but he was not present on Sunday as India seized an insurmountable 2-0 lead in the three-match series in Cuttack.

February 19 marks the start of the 50-over Champions Trophy in Dubai and Pakistan.

Captain Jos Buttler acknowledged following England’s four-wicket loss that he was fairly certain Bethell had been disqualified from the Champions Trophy. That is truly disheartening for him. He has been one of the most entertaining players, and he obviously played well the other day,” he continued.

“It’s unfortunate that his injury will prevent him from playing.”

Although they haven’t released an official statement regarding Bethell’s condition, England called up Somerset batsman Tom Banton as a backup on Sunday.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Banton, 26, was supposed to arrive in India on Monday and join the England side for the last match of the series in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. In his six ODI appearances, Banton averages 26.80 runs at bat and has a peak score of 58.

England will play World Cup winners Australia in their Champions Trophy opener on February 22.

By February 12, final squads must be turned in.
