Delhi Capitals topped the Women’s Premier League 2025 standings after crushing the Mumbai Indians by nine wickets. Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma put on a brilliant display with the bat to win the match after chasing 124 runs.

In the Women’s Premier League, the Delhi Capitals easily defeated the Mumbai Indians, the previous champions, by nine wickets on Friday, securing the top spot in the standings. DC was asked to bowl and, because to Jess Jonassen’s excellent ball-handling, first held the victor of the first edition, MI, to 123 for nine.

G Kamalini, captain Harmanpreet Kaur, and in-form Nat Sciver-Brunt were all vitally removed by Jonassen, who returned with remarkable figures of 3 for 25 from her four overs, shattering the backbone of DC. Shafali Verma (43 off 28) and captain Meg Lanning (60 not out off 49) combined for 85 runs off only 59 balls as they chased the small mark, giving DC a strong start.

In the process of trying to knock right-arm bowler Amanjot Kaur over deep midwicket, Shafali was removed despite being in excellent form. She didn’t get the elevation, so Amelia Kerr had an easy catch close to the boundary. However, Shafali and Lanning’s aggressive batting had at that point all but guaranteed DC the victory.

Shafali’s 28-ball hit included two sixes and four boundaries.

After struggling to score runs, Lanning finally arrived to the celebration with a sophisticated, undefeated knock that was packed with nine boundaries.

While DC chased down the mark with 33 balls remaining, Jemimah Rodrigues stayed undefeated at 15 off 10 balls.

Prior to losing their openers Hayley Matthews (22) and Yastika Bhatia (11) in quick succession, DC had a respectable start when they decided to bat.Together with captain Harmanpreet Kaur (18), Sciver-Brunt maintained her excellent form, sharing 38 runs for the third wicket before the latter was removed LBW by Jonassen in the eleventh over. However, in the 14th over, Sciver-Brunt gave Jonassen a straightforward return catch to get out.

Then, while attempting an elaborate shot over the leg side, Sajeevan Sajana failed to further her team’s case by ballooning a routine catch to DC captain Meg Lanning off Minnu Mani’s bowling at extra cover.

With MI struggling at 104 for 7 in 17.5 overs, G Kamalini was also unable to save her team after being thrashed by Jonassen in the 18th over.

With no fixed batter in hand, MI struggled toward the finish but somehow passed the 120-run threshold without getting bowled out. With eight points from six games, the victory allowed DC to leap to the top of the WPL standings, while MI dropped to second place with six points from five games.

While MI will play UP Warriorz in Lucknow on March 6, DC’s next game is against Royal Challengers Bengaluru here on Saturday.
