The Sydney Sixers reportedly made an offer to Australian batter Steve Smith, but he reportedly declined it in advance of the next Big Bash League (BBL) season. After Australia’s summer test series at the end of the year, Smith told the team he is not sure if he will need a break. The batter also acknowledged that he wanted to make room on the club for younger players rather than guarantee his status.
Now it’s up to Sydney Sixers to decide whether to add a young player to the season’s 18-man squad or reserve a position for the former Australia captain. This might also affect their selection of recruits for the upcoming BBL draught, which will take place on August 28.
According to Smith’s manager Warren Craig, the actor has as of right now chosen not to commit. There will be a tonne of cricket today.
In spite of Cricket Australia’s (CA) promise to let Smith play a few BBL games if he changes his mind, the Sydney Sixers may be taking a risk by holding onto a berth in the team till the end of the year when the 33-year-old is still doubtful of his availability.
According to Newscorp reports, if Smith is at all interested in playing in the league later, the BBL is anxious to find a way to bring him on board with the Sixers as a replacement player. Smith has played in 229 T20 games and amassed 4,724 runs over his career. In the format, he also has a century, 21 fifty-hit innings, and 54 wickets with the ball.
