On Tuesday, a day before the WTC final against Australia, India captain Rohit Sharma was struck on the thumb during a net session.
World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval, Team India captain Rohit Sharma was struck on the thumb during a net session. As a cautious step, he quickly exited the net session.
The World Test final will be Rohit’s biggest test as a Test captain, a post he was given by the selectors when Virat Kohli stepped down in January 2022. Rohit has now captained India in six matches, all at home. He was anticipated to play in the rescheduled Test in England last year, but he was unable to do so because to Covid-19, and he also missed the Test series in Bangladesh due to a thumb injury.
If Rohit does start the game on Tuesday, it will be his only seventh appearance in England, despite making his debut in the format in 2013. But England will undoubtedly recall his excellent performance as a Test opener on his way to a century at The Oval – a beautiful 127 – which remains his lone century outside the subcontinent.
Rohit will also be hoping for his first ICC title as a captain, having missed out on the opportunity in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where India lost in the semi-finals.
“Test cricket is the ultimate format, the most difficult format, and winning it will mean everything to us,” Rohit stated at the pre-match news conference. “I want to take this Indian team forward and win 1-2 ICC titles.”
