Aditya Samant, an International Master, was promoted to Grandmaster when he began his ninth round game against fellow countryman Aryan Chopra at the BielChess MTO 2023 event.
On Wednesday, Aditya S Samant became India’s 83rd Grandmaster. When Samant, a 17-year-old International Master, began his ninth round game against compatriot Aryan Chopra at the BielChess MTO 2023 event, he became a GM. He had drew from his eighth round game against Bu Xiangzhi and needed to play the ninth round regardless of the outcome to earn his final GM norm. Samant from Maharashtra had previously surpassed the 2500 Elo level in the live ratings and acquired two GM norms, thus the third and final norm was all that was required to become India’s newest Grandmaster.
To become a GM, a player must obtain three GM norms and have a live rating of 2,500 Elo points.
His live rating going into the ninth round game is 2525.4.
He won his first GM standard at the Abu Dhabi Masters in August of last year. He earned his second GM standard at the third El Llobregat Open in December 2022.
In a tweet, the Biel Chess Festival remarked, “Exciting! Congratulations, Aditya Samant S!#BielChess appears to be a fantastic site to crown Indian Grandmasters! – In 2021, @HarshitRaja1 won his third GM-norm in Biel; in 2022, @GMPranavAnand earned his third GM-norm in Biel; and in 2023, Aditya Samant S!” V Prraneeth of Telangana was elected as the country’s 82nd governor in May.
