Aitana Bonmati, a Barcelona and Spain player, won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the second time in a row on Monday. She did this after leading her team to a record continental quadruple of trophies and winning the Nations League with her nation.

After leading her team to an unprecedented continental quadruple of trophies and winning the Nations League with her nation, Barcelona and Spain star Aitana Bonmati won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the second time in a row on Monday. Since the award’s inception in 2018, the 26-year-old playmaker has joined teammate Alexia Putellas as the only female recipient of the Ballon d’Or twice. After accepting the honor, Bonmati remarked, “I am extremely fortunate to be surrounded by players who help me improve every day. This cannot be accomplished alone.”

“Thanks to the staff, to the club workers, without you we would not achieve so much success.”

Bonmati, who was already regarded as one of the greatest women’s players of all time, was Barcelona’s best player as they won a ton of trophies in the 2023–2024 season.

The Spanish league, the Copa de la Reina, the Supercopa de Espana, and a second consecutive Women’s Champions League were all won by the Catalans last season.

Barcelona won their third Champions League trophy in four seasons after defeating Lyon 2-0 in the final, thanks in part to Bonmati’s goal and player-of-the-match performance.

“Most proud I’ve ever been”

“This is our first victory over Lyon. After her season’s high point, which took place in front of 51,000 fans at San Mames stadium in Bilbao, Bonmati remarked, “I’m proud of the team, and we know that with these fans we have, we can’t fail.”

The petite midfielder, who attended Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy, was also voted UEFA’s player of the season for her team’s impressive European campaign, which included six goals and six assists.

Bonmati played a significant role in leading Barcelona to a seventh consecutive league championship with eight goals and eleven assists in Spain’s Liga F.In February, the 2023 World Cup champion scored Spain’s first goal in a 2-0 victory over France in the final, adding the first Women’s Nations League to her record.

Because of her performances and goals in the semifinals and final, she was once more chosen by UEFA as the overall player of the tournament.

Only a shocking loss to Brazil in the Olympic semi-final denied Bonmati the opportunity to win an incredible six club and national trophies in a single season.Bonmati became the first football player to win Sportswoman of the Year at the Laureus Awards in April. She and her Spain teammates received the honor after winning the Women’s World Cup in August 2023.

She was also praised for protesting alongside her teammates against the shamed former president Luis Rubiales’s forced kissing of player Jenni Hermoso, which helped to battle sexism in the Spanish football association.

She is an example of a player. In May, former Barcelona coach Jonatan Giraldez praised his star player, saying, “She just sets a great example in the way she trains, her attitude, and the way she approaches things every day.””We first connected while she was just beginning her profession. I have seen her mature and go through all of the stages. She deserves all that has occurred to her, and I’m happy to have witnessed it all.”

50 worldwide football writers vote on a shortlist of 30 players to determine the women’s Ballon d’Or winner.
