On Day 1, India took the lead after England was bowled out for 246 thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal and the bowlers.

On the opening day of the upcoming first Test in Hyderabad, former India skipper Anil Kumble said that England had lost a trick by not giving the ball to Joe Root. On the first day, the visitors chose to bat, and Yashasvi Jaiswal and the bowlers gave India the upper hand. Ben Stokes led the way for England at bat, smashing 70 runs, but the Indian bowlers did a great job keeping them to 246. As India concluded Day 1 at 119/1, Jaiswal responded by raising his game to an undefeated 76 in the last session.

On Day 1, Jack Leach scored for England while Rohit Sharma was removed from the game on 24.

Kumble chastised England captain Stokes for failing to pass the ball to Root following Jaiswal’s destruction in the last hour of play on Day 1.

Joe Root is a player who can really turn the ball and has good motion, so I felt that England missed a trick by not using him. Additionally, we saw Ashwin cause problems for left-handers like Yashasvi Jaiswal. Kumble informed the broadcasters, “So England probably missed a trick.”

On Day 2, Root dismissed Jaiswal in the opening over, fulfilling Kumble’s forecast.

Beyond calling the England spinners “inconsistent”, Kumble also said that they did not take advantage of the circumstances, in contrast to the Indian bowlers.

“I believe the length is the first. They just aren’t consistent at all when it comes to helping you out a little. With the Indian spinners, we witnessed that. They bowled the wrong lengths because it was twisting as soon as they bowled a decent length. The first thing you need is confidence, and secondly, when you want to spin. Leach is coming in after not really playing for a while, and Hartley is playing his first game.”
