Asian Games: In the women’s 400m hurdles, Vithya Ramraj equals PT Usha’s national record

Vithya finished first in her heat and second overall in the women’s 400 m hurdles, clocking personal best times of 55.42 seconds to qualify for the final.

On Monday, Indian athlete Vithya Ramraj tied PT Usha’s 39-year-old national record as she qualified for the final of the women’s 400 m hurdles at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Jesse Sandesh, Mohammed Afsal Pulikkalakath, and Krishnan Kumar also advanced to the medal round. Vithya finished first in her heat and second overall in the women’s 400 m hurdles, clocking personal best times of 55.42 seconds to qualify for the final.

Kaveram Sinchal Ravi finished fourth and bottom in heat two with times of 58.62, failing to qualify for the medal round. She also came in eighth place overall.

Despite reaching the final of the men’s high jump, Jesse Sandesh and Anil Sarvesh Kushare were unable to clear 2.26 metres, the automatic qualification mark. Jesse finished sixth in Group A with a jump of 2.10 m, while Anil finished fourth in Group B with a jump of 2.10 m. Both athletes finished tenth and eleventh, respectively, to be among the top 12 athletes privileged to compete in the medal round.

The men’s high jump final will begin at 4:30 PM IST on Wednesday, October 4.

Mohammed Afsal and Krishnan qualified for the men’s 800 m final. Afsal, a South Asian Games silver medalist, finished first in his heat and second overall in 1:46.79 minutes. Krishnan, the Asian silver medallist in the event, finished eighth overall and second in heat three with a timing of 1:49.45 minutes. He was one of the top eight athletes to qualify for the final round.

Tomorrow at 5:55 PM IST, the men’s 800m final will take place.

Santosh Kumar Tamilarasan finished second in his heats and fourth overall with timings of 49.28 seconds to enter the final in the men’s 400 m hurdles, and Yashas Palaksha recorded 49.61 seconds to take second in heat three and fourth overall to reach the final.

So far, India has 12 medals in athletics, including two gold, five silver, and five bronze.
India now owns a total of 55 medals, including 13 gold, 21 silver, and 21 bronze. The athletics competitions began on September 29 and will continue through October 5.
