As his state team, Bengal, defeated Punjab by an innings in their final group encounter at the Eden Gardens here on Saturday, Wriddhiman Saha said goodbye to competitive cricket. Saha wore the wicketkeeper’s gloves for the final few minutes of the game, and the Bengal players respectfully carried him off the field on their shoulders.

The Siliguri-born Saha, who played for Tripura for two seasons before returning to Bengal, had earlier this season declared his intention to retire following the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy assignment.

Saha, who received congratulations before the game, signed off after taking heartfelt photos with his loved ones and teammates.”My lengthy travel has been enjoyable in every way. For every squad I have played for, I have given it my all—many memories. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who helped me along the way. It’s time for me to spend time with my family now,” Saha remarked.

Laxmi Ratan Shukla, the head coach of the Bengals, stated: “Wriddhiman has always been a team-man, supporting youngsters.” He returned to play cricket at the club level even after representing India. He is incredibly dedicated.

Anustup Majumdar, the Bengal captain, recalled Saha’s role. “We have played at both the youth and senior levels, spending a lot of time together. He has been outstanding both as a wicketkeeper and with the bat.The 40-year-old averaged 29.41 in 40 Test matches and amassed 1353 runs, including three hundreds. Saha, regarded as one of the best keepers, made 12 stumpings and took 92 catches. He also played in nine ODIs.
