The dismissal of Shubman Gill initiated the controversy, which resulted in the fans present at the Oval booing Australian cricketers.
The supporters of Team India who were present at the Oval on Saturday resorted to booing the Australian team, mainly Cameron Green, after the dive of the all-rounder to dismiss the young opener Shubman Gill, which looked inconclusive to the naked eye. Gill scored 18 runs in an opening stand of 41 and was looking in good form. As tea was called, a dejected captain of Team India, Rohit Sharma, was seen having a chat with on-field umpires while going back to the pavilion.
It was the second time in the game that Green took a screamer after Ajinkya Rahane’s catch in the first inning. Although replays suggested that it was a close call, some of the camera angles suggested that the ball was touching the grass.
The soft signal, which was removed from the playing conditions before the final, could have gone in India’s favor if the on-field umpires had signaled it out to the TV umpire. The final call was with TV umpire Richard Kettleborough, who adjudged it a fair catch.
Soon after this, chants of “cheat, cheat, cheat” were heard, which were repeated when Green came on to bowl.
Former spinner Harbhajan Singh, who is commentating on the game, also felt that the replays were inconclusive.
