Bangladesh Makes Test History With A 10-Wicket Win, Embarrassing Pakistan At Home

The Bangladesh cricket team provided much-needed solace at home with a historic Test victory. As the country attempts to emerge from political upheaval, its men’s cricket team sent a wave of joy back home by earning its first Test victory over Pakistan. Bangladesh and Pakistan have played a total of 13 matches in the longest format of the game, with the Bangla Tigers losing 12 and drawing one. The first Test of the two-match series in Rawalpindi, however, yielded a first for Bangladesh, as they won by ten wickets.

Bangladesh’s triumph was also the first occasion in Test cricket history when a visiting team defeated Pakistan by ten wickets at home.

Pakistan and Bangladesh first met in a Test match in 2001 as part of the Asian Test Championship, which also featured Sri Lanka. The Lankans won the tri-series. Pakistan and Bangladesh played their first bilateral series in 2002, with the former prevailing 2-0.

On August 25, 2024, Bangladesh won their first match versus Pakistan in the longest format of the game.

In terms of the match, Pakistan performed well on a batting-friendly track after rain delayed the start on Day 1. Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan each scored hundreds, bringing the team’s total to 448 runs before skipper Shan Masood declared the innings. Bangladesh responded with powerful batting efforts from Mushfiqur Rahim (191) and Shadman Islam (93) to score 565 runs before being bowled out.Bangladesh’s 117-run lead in the first innings gave them hope heading into the second. On Day 5, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib al Hasan put Pakistan’s batting squad under great duress, taking seven wickets between them as the hosts were bowled out for 146 runs.
Bangladesh had little time in getting the 30 runs required to win the match. Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam remained undefeated as their team won by 10 wickets. The rest is history.
