In Dambulla on Saturday, Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets to begin their Women’s T20 Asia Cup campaign on a high note. Sri Lanka reached 114/3 in 17.1 overs, needing only 17 balls to finish after holding Bangladesh to a meager 111 for eight. Bangladesh, who had elected to bat first, had a terrible start, losing three wickets for the first six runs scored. Before captain Nigar Sultana steadied the floundering ship with a 48-run knock that came off 59 balls and included six boundaries, it was soon 17/4, 48/5, and finally 48/6.Bangladesh reached 100 thanks to a quick 14-ball 25 from Shorna Akter, who batted lower on the order.

Sugandika Kumari, Kavisha Dilhari, and Chamari Athapaththu each claimed one wicket, while Udeshika Prabodhani (2/20) and Inoshi Priyadharshani (2/17) claimed two wickets apiece for Sri Lanka.

With 51 off 48 balls, opener Vishmi Gunaratne was the top scorer for Sri Lanka in the batting order. During her knock, she smashed seven fours and one six.

With her team just one wicket away from victory, Harshitha Samarawickrama chipped in with 33 off of 31 balls.

With excellent figures of 3/12 in her allotted four overs, Nahida Akter emerged as Bangladesh’s top bowler. In the opening match of the day, Thailand defeated Malaysia by a margin of 22 runs.

With wicketkeeper Nannapat Koncharoenkai top-scoring with 35 balls and Phannita Maya contributing with 29 in 28 deliveries, Thailand reached 133 for six after they elected to bat first.

The most productive bowler for Malaysia was Mahirah Izzati Ismail, who returned outstanding figures of 3/16 in four overs.

Despite starter Wan Julia’s half century (52 off 53 balls), Thailand kept their opponents to 111 for eight in the allocated 20 overs, therefore Mahirah’s exertion was in vain.

Along with Julia, the captain Winifred Duraisingam put up a 68-run partnership at the top of the order with 22 runs in 28 balls. But from then on, Malaysian batting crumbled as Thailand won with a well-managed display of their bowling.
