Biggest Cricket Scandals in the History

Cricket has unfortunately been plagued by a number of scandals over the years. Here are some of the biggest ones:

Match-fixing scandal (1990s-2000s): This scandal involved players being paid to deliberately underperform or even lose games, in order to manipulate the outcome and earn money for bookmakers. Several high-profile players, including Mohammad Azharuddin, Hansie Cronje, and Salman Butt, were implicated in the scandal.
Ball-tampering scandal (2018): In a Test match between South Africa and Australia in March 2018, Australian player Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera using sandpaper to tamper with the ball. It was later revealed that the incident had been planned by the team’s leadership group, including captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner, who were subsequently banned from international cricket for a year.
IPL spot-fixing scandal (2013): The Indian Premier League (IPL), a popular T20 cricket tournament, was hit by a spot-fixing scandal in 2013. Several players, including Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan, were arrested for allegedly accepting money to fix specific parts of matches. The incident led to a lot of controversy and tarnished the reputation of the tournament.
Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket (1970s): In the 1970s, media mogul Kerry Packer launched his own cricket tournament, the World Series Cricket, which featured a number of innovative changes to the sport, including coloured clothing and floodlights. The tournament was initially met with resistance from cricket’s establishment, but eventually gained acceptance and helped transform the sport.
Hansie Cronje’s involvement with bookmakers (2000): South African captain Hansie Cronje was banned from cricket for life in 2000 after admitting to accepting money from bookmakers to fix matches. The scandal rocked the cricketing world and led to calls for greater transparency and regulation in the sport.
