Burnley’s promotion to the Championship was the fastest during the Championship era, and they still have seven games left.

Burnley defeated Middlesbrough 2-1 on the road on Saturday to clinch their promotion back to the Premier League. Ashley Barnes gave Vincent Kompany’s team, who have the best away record in the Championship thus far, the lead in the 12th minute. Chuba Akpom then tied the score from the penalty spot early in the second half. However, the Clarets secured top-flight promotion on their first attempt after being relegated when Connor Roberts scored the winning goal with less than 25 minutes of regular time remaining.

At the Riverside Stadium, wild celebrations broke out as the Burnley players and coach Kompany thronged the pitch before moving straight to the seats to celebrate the victory with the visiting fans.

With only six games left, third-placed Luton is 19 points behind the Clarets at the top of the Championship after a 19-game unbeaten league streak.

Burnley’s promotion was the quickest throughout the Championship era, and they still have seven games remaining.

After his first stint as manager of Anderlecht came to an end, the decision to move quickly to secure the former Manchester City captain turned out to be a stroke of genius.

When Burnley’s six-year tenure in the English Premier League ended last season, many people feared the worst.

With Middlesbrough remaining in fourth place, Burnley’s victory also pushed Sheffield United one step closer to a return to the Premier League.

Following a 1-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Wigan at Bramall Lane, Iliman Ndiaye’s lone goal gave the Blades an eight-point lead in second place and a game in hand.
