QFA stated that a mutual agreement marked the conclusion of the arrangement with Carlos Queiroz. Queiroz will be replaced as head coach by Marquez Lopez, a Spanish coach. The AFC Asian Cup will be hosted by Qatar in 2023.

Felix Sanchez resigned from the role in February, and Queiroz, a former coach of Real Madrid, Portugal, and Iran, was brought in on a four-year contract. At the 2022 World Cup, Sanchez was in charge when host Qatar lost all three of their games.

The Qatari football association said in a statement on Wednesday that “Queiroz’s tenure as head coach of the Qatar national team has ended amicably by mutual agreement.”

“The QFA expresses its sincere gratitude to coach Queiroz for his unwavering dedication, leadership, and contributions during his tenure as the head coach of the national team.”

Although Queiroz’s alleged defensive style of play and his inability to include young players from the nation’s Aspire Academy in the senior roster raised concerns locally, no formal explanation was provided for the decision.

Queiroz disregarded the conjecture. He only oversaw 11 games, two of which were victories over Afghanistan and India in November to begin the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Shortly after Queiroz’s exit was made official, the QFA declared that Spanish coach Marquez Lopez had been appointed in his place. The former manager of Espanyol previously worked at the Aspire Academy in Qatar. He departs Al-Wakrah, a team in the Qatar Stars League, to assume leadership of the national squad.

“The QFA expresses gratitude and appreciation to Al-Wakrah Sports Club for their cooperation and consent in facilitating coach Marquez Lopez’s appointment as the national team head coach for the upcoming period,” announced the Qatar Football Association.

Midway through December, Qatar is scheduled to begin a pre-Asian Cup training camp.

Following China’s surrender of the rights, the 2022 World Cup hosts assumed responsibility for organizing the continental competition. In Group A, China, Tajikistan, and Lebanon will compete for Qatar, which won the Asian championship under Sanchez.
