In anticipation of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024, Chamari Athapaththu has inked a three-year contract with Sydney Thunder. As an undrafted free agent, the Sri Lankan captain joined the Thunder last season, covering for the club’s fourth overseas spot while several of their drafted cricket players were unavailable.
After finishing the season as the second-highest run scorer, Athapaththu proved to be a formidable opponent. With a 129.69 average, five half-centuries, and 511 runs at an average of 42.58 were scored by the left-hander. In addition, she claimed nine wickets, including three against the Sydney Sixers.
In the end, she also took home the Player of the Tournament title after winning four Player of the Match honors. As Thunder’s player of the year, she also received the Alex Blackwell Medal.
