Sri Lankan spinner Matheesha Pathirana recorded his best IPL numbers, taking four wickets as Chennai Super Kings upset Mumbai Indians by 20 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, despite Rohit Sharma’s brave unbroken century. Pathirana claimed the wickets of Ishan Kishan (23), Surya Kumar Yadav (0), Tilak Varma (31) and Romario Shepherd (1) to finish with 4 for 28 as MI lost steam in the chase of an imposing 206/4, scoring 186 for six.
Rohit batted from start to finish for an undefeated 105 off 63 deliveries, his second IPL century, but he couldn’t find a partner who could stick with him long enough to form a strong combination. Earlier, CSK’s top-order batsman Shivam Dube and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad hit stroke-filled half-centuries as the five-time champions posted 206-4.
Dube hit an unbeaten 66 off 38 deliveries, while Gaikwad smacked a 40-ball 69, including five maximums, as the two built up a 90-run stand after CSK’s openers Ajinkya Rahul (5) and Rachin Ravindra (21) were dropped cheaply.
