Dale Steyn and Graeme Smith are all too familiar with the hearbreak that comes with being South Africans during ICC events.
Though the Proteas broke the curse by making it to their first-ever T20 World Cup final, Graeme Smith and Dale Steyn were overcome with emotion. They are both all too aware with the sorrow of being South Africans at ICC competitions. After losing their previous seven semifinal matches, South Africa advanced to the final after thumping Afghanistan by nine wickets in Tarouba, Trinidad. It’s the championship round. In his X account, former captain Smith tagged current captain Aiden Markram and commented, “Couldn’t be happier for @AidzMarkaram and the team, one more to go.”
“Emotions run high here. We have entered the final. Proteas with their fangs biting each other! “Destructive poetry has been in motion. lovely to observe.” Steyn wrote something on his X handle.
“Congratulations @ProteasMenCSA on reaching the finals in the T20 World Cup for the first time beating Afghanistan by 9 wickets.” Although they were devastated by the outcome in the semifinals, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) praised the opponents for making it to the championship match.
Not really the conclusion to this T20 World Cup that we had hoped for. However, special recognition should go to #AfghanAtalan for an incredible performance that lasted the entire tournament.
“Congratulations to @ProteasMenCSA for securing their first-ever final berth in World Cup cricket.”
